There Will Be

By: Chantelle Mathewson

There are going to be days when all you want to do is cry.
Banging your head against the wall
And screaming until your throat is sore
Just seems so much easier than facing the demons
That have writhed inside of you for so long.

There are going to be weeks when even the sun at its peak isn’t enough.
Feeling the warmth caress your skin and seep into your bones
Is only going to make it worse
Until your skin itches so bad
That you want to peel it off.

There are going to be months when life doesn’t seem worth it.
You are going to sit alone in a dark room
Holding a bottle, a razor, maybe a rope,
And your mind will scream yes while
Your heart remains silent.

There are going to be years that seem empty.
You are going to look back and wonder where they went
While you were struggling just below the surface,
Trying to keep afloat,
And they swam right by.

These are the secrets no one tells you
When you first appear in this world,
So hopeful and bright and smiling.
No one wants to crush your dreams so early,
So they let you found out on your own.

Your life is going to be made of
Days
Weeks
Months
Years
That all seem worthless,
A muddle of incoherent thoughts strung together to create something
So far fetched you’ll feel lost in a sea of people
You don’t belong in.

You will realize though,
After the
Days
Weeks
Months
Years
Go by,
That what once seemed so far off
What once seemed so unreal,
So worthless
Was preparing you for a war.

A war that can only be won by the strongest,
The most daring.
The war is called life,
And only those who have faced the worst demons,
The monsters who live within and stare from our own souls,
Will rise higher and return
At the end
Victorious.
