14 Things No One Tells You About Being in a Sorority

1. Rush is not fun like it looks. It's nice that you, pretty little freshface, get to walk into a beautifully arranged room of confetti and smiles, but it took literal weeks of practice to make sure it looked that way. Also, our house isn't air conditioned and our rush chair made us sing for three hours yesterday! Spoiler alert: The sisters want to impress you even more than you want to impress them.

2. Rush is exactly as fun as it looks. But after we were done singing, we fell into a pile of pizza and talked about how fuhreaking exhausted we were. It was great.
3. Not everybody likes each other. As much as I wish I could bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles and everyone would eat and be happy, I can guarantee you that no sorority chapter gets along completely. Sorority life is like Thanksgiving with your family, really. You are happy, loved, and full most of the time. But there's probably one person you just want to punch in the face.
4. Lineages aren't always perfectly matched. Inevitably, you adore your big and your little, but you're not always paired how you thought you'd be. Very simply, sorority lineages are a matching system. Rush is a shitstorm of first impressions and chanting — it's easy to get caught up in that. That being said, families are usually formed over the immediate post-rush champagne bottles and time.
5. Dues are expensive. Like, really expensive. And there are a lot of them: national dues, chapter dues, housing dues, etc. Woof. But sororities usually have payment plans, just like college itself.
6. "Nationals" is a 23-year-old girl. Yes, it's also a refined group of older women who reminisce on their college days and make rules for a living, but when nationals declares they are visiting without warning, nationals is Becky and Becky isn't ready for the Real World yet. Becky will stay on your futon for longer than she's supposed to. Also, she'll be back in three months for Spring Fling. Hiiiii, Becky.
7. Chapter is not a fun group experience. You always imagined *snapping* in agreement and sitting in a happy circle. This usually only happens when someone decides to order seven pizzas because attendance and voting is taking too long. Chapter is essentially a weekly meeting. It starts with announcements and ends with everyone happy it's over.
8. There is sorority language. PNMs, girl-flirting, girl-dating, NMEs, legacies, etc. ~*yOu'Ll NeVeR kNoW*~ P.S. Yeah, secret handshakes are for real.
9. Greek life becomes an important social and professional network. To those who think sororities are just for girls who like to get drunk and make bad decisions, I'll have you know that so many women take advantage of the huge opportunities Greek life presents them with by networking the shit out of their alumnae sisters. You have an inherent connection to anyone who went through the same experiences you went through.
10. There are theme parties and then there aretheme parties. Yes, there are toga parties and anything-but-clothes parties and, yes, I see your super cool AEPi rave. I raise you one Stilts and Kilts theme. Be prepared to spend a good chunk of your Thursdays making costumes for the weekend. Yep.
11. Sororities are not exclusive  you can be friends with everyone! So many people believe that sorority girls are exclusive, bitchy, and/or cliquey. It's not true! In most cases, it's guys who fall into the exclusivity of Greek life. Sorority women are down with friendship with everyone, whether they're in the same house, a different house, or not a part of Greek life at all. Never once in my college life did I feel confined by my chapter. Snaps for friendship!
12. There are non-fun sorority requirements. Sometimes at not-fun chapter, you get assigned mandatory not-fun things. Get comfy in your campus auditorium, because you will be attending a lot of things. Being in a sorority also means philanthropy and volunteering. While it's rewarding and fun and super important, it's also Sunday and you're hungover.
13. Sorority life is a time-suck. Between the volunteering, partying, pledging, and chapter meetings, you spend so much time with your house.
14. You really do make friends for life. See Nos. 1–13. How could you not? It makes everything worth it.
